First of all, let me be clear: I understand the appeal of UBI. It sounds nice, easy and like it would help many people. But that is precisely the problem! It makes it far too easy for people to live. That’s really the trouble with our world right now. Everyone just wants to get free stuff, but noone is actually willing to put in the work to produce something of value. If we just give everyone free money, who is going to want to work to produce all the things that we want to buy?

Let me give you an example: I’m an Agile Consultant at BSFC, one of the larges Finance Consulting Agencies in the world. Our customers include global investment banks, hedge fund managers, private equity and venture capital firms asset mangers, and the list just goes on. All of these are essential businesses without whom our world could not function. As an Agile Consultant, I empower our partners to master the Agile transformation, onboard the SCRUM-process, optimize performance metrics analysis, overview and implement evidence-based productivity enhancement protocols. In addition to that, I’m also responsible for moderating dailies, organizing retros and leading team-building exercises. In other words: Real work with actual results. I’ll admit, it’s a tough job, but I love it.

But with UBI, I’m afraid, noone would want to do this kind of work anymore. Most people would probably rather be “creative” or “work with their hands” or “contribute to the community” or whatever buzzword is popular today. But real jobs like mine would just be left on the sidelines. At the current rate, I’m afraid that we’re going to end up in a world where people just do whatever they want, with noone to manage them. And noone could possibly want that.
