BRIGHTON – TENNESSEE Five years ago, PrimeBeef, one of the largest slaughterhouses in the region, was in serious trouble. While demand for fresh beef was surging, it was becoming ever more challenging to find new employees. “No one wants to work anymore” says PrimeBeef CFO Samuel Hunter. But rather than to despair, this business saw the employment-crisis as an opportunity to fully embrace the digital transformation.
“We’ve partnered with a technology consulting firm to create a fully automatic processing and self-checkout system, that our livestock can interact with via an app. That way, we eliminate the need for human cattle-drivers or butchers. All they need to do is download the app and perform a two-factor authentication. When they’re ready for processing, each cow receives a push-notification, informing it of its assigned self-checkout destination. Once it arrives at the self-checkout station, it only needs to scan a QR code, and then the fully automated butchering process can begin.”
By adopting a fully automated livestock self-checkout system, the company is estimated to save millions in wages and other employment-associated fees every year. Other large slaughterhouses in the region are following suit and have announced their own plans for comprehensive digitization in their meat-processing plants. “It’s the future of butchering,” says Hunter, “since introducing this system, we’ve opened up entirely new streams of revenue. Not only have we eliminated the need for human workers, but we’ve also integrated data-harvesting and ads within our apps for an extra-passive income.”
